Formatia din San Francisco este cunoscuta in primul rand pentru hitul folk-rock de imitatie britanica "Laugh Laugh", din 1963, (care le-a adus o scurta aparitie sub numele de The Beau Brummelstones, intr-unul din episoadele desenelor animate The Flintstones). Dar cel de-al patrulea album al lor este o adevarata comoara, prea putin apreciata, un amestec de folk.rock si country hipnotic, care rezista comparatiei chiar si cu cele mai bune inregistrari ale contemporanilor lor mai faimosi.</div>

Discul anterior al trupei, Beau Brummels '66, fusese o compilatie de melodii neoriginale in interpretari insipide, care il determinase pe tobosarul animator al grupului, John Peterson sa plece la Harper's Bizarre. Restul membrilor trupei au scapat de obligatia de a concertagratie crizelor de diabet ale chitaristului Ron Elliot si au ales sa isi concentreze atentia asupra noilor tehnologii de studio, cu ajutorul p`roducatorului Lenny Waroncker, care cauta atunci sa isi faca o buna reputatie la Warner Bros. si sustinea ideea de a da mana libera formatiilor in conceperea si realizarea albumelor.</div>

Rezultatul a fost discul cel mai bun al grupului The Brummels. talentul componistic al lui Elliot se maturizase, trecand de faza cantecelor vioaie de doua minute, in timp ce vocea lui Sal valentino incepuse sa capete o nuanta profunda, nazala, contrastand superb cu orchestratiile bizare care includ viori, acordeon si harpa (la aceasta din urma canta pe "Magic Hollow" colaboratorul lui Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks). Elliot considera albumul "un fel de receptacul al schimbarilor in starea de spirit al lumii din jurul nostru... Muzica devenise eterica, mistica si misterioasa". In ciuda recenziilor exultante, Triangle nu a atins insa decat locul 197 in topul Billboard.</div>

Remarcabile sunt extraordinara "Stephanie Knows Who", cu ritmul sau variabil, "Orange Skies" a regretatului Brian McLean (candva hamal al trupei "The Byrds", aici insa dovedind un temperament de showman) si coplesitoarea "Seven And Seven Is", a carei inregistrare s-a incheiat dupa mai bine de 50 de reluari - pentru ca partea de percutie era atat de solicitanta, incat Lee si "Snoopy" Pfisterer au trebuit s-a abordeze pe rand - si a devenit un single de mare succes in America. Dar albumul lor de debut a fost exploziv.</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-family:arial;">Fostul membru al trupei Jefferson Airplane, Skip Spence (melodia sa "My Best Friend" apare pe Surrealistic Pillows), si fopstul impresar al trupei Matthew Katz au adunat un nou grup de muzicieni in jurul originalului geniu care era Spence. Cei patru pe care i-au ales (chitaristii Jerry Miller si Peter Lewis, tobosarul Don Stevenson, si basistul Bob Mosley) erau cu totii compozitori inzestrati si inspirati creatori de armonii vocale, asa incat, captivantul album pe care l-au scos impreuna pentru (11.000 de dolari) a facut furori in San Francisco.</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-family:arial;">Pareau porniti sa devina staruri de prim rang in America. Prima melodie, "Hey Grandma", debordeaza de efervescente armonii vocale si tipete de chitara. In energica "Fall On You" ascultam vocea tunatoare a lui Lewis, un solo fluid de chitara si niste tobe neobosite. De la sunetul acustic dulce, spaniol, al lui "8.05" la sentimentalul "Come In The Morning" si la stpefiantul "Omaha" al lui Spence, toate compozitiile sunt viguroase, hotarate si expansive. Cum de au putut sa nu aibe succes?</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-family:arial;">Ei bine, pentru inceput Columbia a lansat cinci dintre ele, simultan, pe discuri single, anihilandu-le din start orice sansa de a se ridica in clasamente. Apoi, trei dintre membri grupului au fost arestati pentru detinere de marijuana si l;egaturi cu minore. Iar in fotografia de pe coperta Stevenson facea clar catre camera un gest obscen (Columbia s-a prins apoi si degetul cu pricina a fost indreptat). Dar sa uitam de toate astea. Capitanul tinea totusi si la succesul comercial, asa ca i-a angajat pe basistul si compozitorul profesionist Herb Bermann sa slefuiasca unele piese si pe Ry Cooder, pe atunci membru al formatiei The Rising Sons, sa faca aranjamente orchestrale si sa cante la vestita sa ghitara slide. Trupa a devenit faimoasa gratie unui single ajuns in 1967 in Top Ten, "For What It`s Worth", un soi de instantaneu, discret si excelent compus de Stephen Stills, al vremurilor acelora agitate. Dar deja in momentul in care acest al doilea LP aparea, Stills si Young se aflau intr-o competitie acerba pentru timp si spatiu, care il marginalizase pe mai putin bataiosul Furay.</span><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" ><br /></span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;font-size:130%;" >Springfield devenise nu atat un grup, cat o colectie de individualitati, care isi vedea fiecare de cantecele sale - mai putin in cazul lui "Good Time Boy" scris de Furay pentru a fi cantat de tobosarul Dewey Martin. Cateva dintre piesele de pe album vestesc viitoarele directii creatoare pe care le vor urma membri trupei: "Expecting To Fly" si "Broken Arrow" sunt peisaje sonore, ambitios orchestrate de Young si Jack Nietzsche, care ulterior aveau sa colaboreze la cateva albume solo ale cantaretului, inclusiv <span style="font-style: italic;">Harvest</span>. Pe de alta parte, "Everydays", remarcabilul "Blue Bird" si indeosebi "Rock and Roll Woman sunt tipice pentru stilul de mai taraziu al lui Stills - o voce rasunatoare pe fondul unui amestec de chiatare acustice limpezi, luminoase si de chitare electrice dure. Combinatia dintre folk-rock-ul cu nuante country al lui Springfield si sonoritatile hard-rock se va dovedi o influenta majora asupra generatiei urmatoare de grupuri rock de pe coasta de vest, cel mai vizibil in cazul trupei The Eagles.<br /><br /></span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;font-size:130%;" >Pe coperta albumului gasim o lista cu cei carora Springfield le datoreaza recunostinta, "prieteni, dusmani si oameni pe care nu-i cunoastem, de la Adam incoace". Mai imprumuta destul de mult din "Soul Makossa" al lui Manu Dibango (avocatii lui Jacko au ajuns la o intelegere destul de costisitoare pentru a evita un proces).</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-size:130%;">In alte parti veti experimenta funk-rock-ul vanturat al lui "Beat It" (solo-ul de chitara al lui Eddie Van Halen a fost decupat din 50 de inregistrari diferite); in timp ce "Human Nature" este o balada digitala atat de frumoasa ca Miles Davis avea sa o cante si el.</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-size:130%;">Dar piesa de cotitura a starului a fost "Billy Jean" (compusa chiar de Jackson insusi n.n.), unde o muzica de bas inspaimantatoare, electronica, iti intra sub piele, in timp ce versurile dubioase iti cer mai degraba sa fii de partea paranoicului superstar milionar decat de a saracei mame singure. Quincy Jones, 1979<br /><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-size:130%;">Spre deosebire de Stevie Wonder, care a trecut parca dintr-o data de la statutul de copil-minune la cel de star adult, Michael Jackson a avut o adolescenta muzicala complicata. In 1979 inca nu avusese nici un hit solo in cei (deja!) sapte ani de cariera, asa ca tanarul in varsta de 19 ani isi cauta cu disperare un nou mentor muzical.<br /><br />In 1977, in timp ce repeta pentru muzicalul The Wiz, Jackson l-a intrebat timid pe Quincy Jones - o adevarata capacitate a jazz-ului si funk-ului - daca nu i-ar putea recomanda un producator. Jones s-a oferit voluntar; in acea perioada alcatuia o trupa de studio in jurul unora dintre colaboratorii sai - Rufus si The Brothers Johnson -, alaturi de alti muzicieni, la care apela doar in anumite situatii, cum era cazul lui Greg Philanganes, care canta la clape in trupa de acompaniament a lui Stevie Wonder, Wonderlove. Impreuna au creat un amestec complex de ritmuri disco extrem de precise, funk de inalta clasa, balade sensibile si acorduri pop, ce au reinventat vocabularul sonor al R&B-ului.<br /><br />La toate acestea se adauga si cativa compozitori de inalta clasa: Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Carole Bayer-Sager si guru muzicii soul britanice, Rod Temperton. Piesa principala a albumului e frenetica "Don`t Stop Til You Get Enough". Strigatele in falsetto ale lui Jackson si scheunaturile jucause se imbina perfect cu linia melodica a piesei, punctand aranjamentul muzical suficient cat sa ii sublinieze calitatea. Si celelalte piese urmeaza aceeasi linie, pana si melodii banale, de un sentimentalism ieftin, precum "She`s Out Of My Life", fiind atat de simple si lipsite de afectare incat la sfarsitul cantecului iti dai seama ca plangi laolalta cu Michael.<br /><br />Albumul s-a vandut in 12 milioane de exemplare, iar "revizia generala" petrecuta sub indrumarea lui Quincy Jones a stabilit un precedent pentru alti artisti care cautau sa scape din sablonul trupelor de adolescenti de ghetou. Piesele apartin catorva din cei mai buni compozitori ai vremii, intre care Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin, pe atunci necunoscutul Jackson Browne (la vremea aceea inca adolescent si iubitul lui Nico) si membrii grupului The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison si John Cale (care o si acompaniaza pe acest album). Dar, desi melodiile nu sunt compuse de ea (cu o singura exceptie, un cantec scris in colaborare), <span style="font-style: italic;">Chelsea Girl</span> confirma din plin originalitatea si potentialul creator al lui Nico.<br /><br />Vocea ei austera si totusi captivanta are ceva magic; orchestratiile sumare de nuanta folk, mizeaza pe flaut, viola electrica, balafon, contrabas si armoniu. Piesele au un aer fascinant, hipnotic - mai cu seama meloncolicele "These Days" si "I`ll Keep It With Mine". Melodia care da titlul albumului, o compozitie Morrison/Reed, face referiri la viata artistului Andy Warhol din New York.<br /><br />Publicul nu era pregatit la vremea respectiva pentru superbele experimente art-rock ale lui Nico si atmosfera lor nostalgica astfel incat albumul nu a facut mare impresie la lansare. Faptul ca nu a fost niciodata, stilistic vorbind, la fel de consecventa ca ele, a reprezentat unul dintre marile dezavantaje ale carierei sale, care i-a facut pe multi critici sa o subestimeze. Dar pana in anii 1960 Simone trecuse deja prin jazz, musical, gospel, pop si folk si se acomodase excelent cu fiecare dintre ele, oferind publicului, oriunde concerta, portii copioase de muzica de calitate - alaturi de inevitabilele momente mai slabe.<br /><br />Desi e doar o compilatie de inregistrari live si in studio din anii 1964-1965, care nu aparusera inca pe disc, <span style="font-style: italic;">Wild Is The Wind</span> exemplifica totusi cel mai bine felul in care stilul eclectic al lui Simone putea da nastere unui discurs muzical coerent.. Albumul e de o diversitate surprinzatoare, cele 11 melodiiconturand un traseu sinuos printre diferite emotii si maniere interpretative, deopotriva convingatoare.<br /><br />Dupa exuberanta si mai directa "I Love Your Lovin` Ways" din deschidere, sumbra melodie "Four Women" pare chiar mai impresionanta. In povestea aceasta despre viata grea a patru femei de culoare mocneste furia aceea abia ascunsa care va deveni mai tarziu tipica pentru cantecele de atitudine politica ale lui Simone.<br /><br />"Why Keep On Brekin` My Heart" si "Either Way I Lose" merg pe urmele hitului ei din 1959, versiunea proprie a melodiei lui Gershwin "I Loves You, Porgy", care incantase publicul larg de muzica pop. Aparitia albumului a fost intarziata de turneele prelungite in Europa si S.U.A. (unde The Yardbirds au devenit o bogata sursa de inspiratie pentru puzderia de formatii de garage rock si muzica psihedelica ale timpului). In fine, piesele au fost compuse si inregistrate in decurs de numai o saptamana, la Advision Studios in Londra.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">The Yardbirds</span> (numit si <span style="font-style: italic;">Roger The Engineer</span>, dupa caricatura de pe coperta) imbina cu succes un gen blues profund emotional, o atmsofera autentic psihedelica, efecte feedback si elemente de incantatie gregoriene. Amticipand stilul heavy blues-rock al trupelor Cream si Led Zeppelin, impresionantele "Lost Woman", "The Nazz Are Blue" si "Rack My Mind" sunt o demonstratie a felului in care formatia putea sa transforme standarde de blues ("Someone To Love Me" de Snooky Prior, "Dusty My Room" de Elmore James si, respectiv, "Baby Scratch My Back" de Slim Harpo) in dezlantuiri furioase, care puneau in valoare abilitatile tehnice incredibile ale lui Beck (in "The Nazz Are Blue", de pilda, solo-ul sau sustinut pe o singura nota e captivant). Eric Clapton, 1966<br /><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-size:130%;">In perioada in care a fost lansat John Mayall`s Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton, in Londra au inceput sa apara grafitti care proclamau, simplu, "Clapton e Dumnezeu". Oricine se indoieste de calitatile de bluesman ale lui Clapton ar trebui sa asculte acest album coplesitor, care a explodat pe scena muzicii britanice ca un butoi cu pulbere.<br /><br />Clapton paraseste formatia The Yardbirds in cautarea unei trupe puriste si a gasit in Mayall un lider muzical care ii impartaseste gusturile si o figura paterna.<br /><br />In studio, alaturi de basistul John McVie si si tobosarul Hughie Flint, Clapton si Mayall au incercat sa reinvie enrgia recitalurilor live ale trupei. Lucrul e vizibil de la prima melodie, o versiune plina de pasiune a cantecului lui Otis Rush "All Your Love", in care impresioneaza pasajele impetuoase la orga si replicile "fierbinti" ale chitarei.<br /><br />Urmatoarea compozitie, "Hideaway", este o mostra memorabila de opulenta interpretativa din partea lui Clapton - pe aceasta varianta a clasicei compzitii a lui Freddie King, tanarul chitarist se dezlantuie furtunos, punandu-si toate fortele la bataie, plin de avant si sigur pe sine. La Fel de stralucitor este Clapton in "Steppin` Out", o melodie boogie extraordinar de intensa.<br /><br />Mayall a contribuit in aceeasi masura la reusita acestui album. Casa de discuri a trebuit sa-i ameninte ca le suspenda contractul daca nu vin in Austin pentru a inregistra ceea ce se va dovedi primul album de acid rock din istoria muzicii. LP-ul s-a vandut nesperat de bine, in mare parte datorita succesului unui single lansat anterior, piesa devenita clasica de garage rock "You`re Gona Miss Me", care a ajuns pe locul 55 in clasamentul Billboard.<br /><br />Promovarea fatisa a beneficiilor halucinogenelor pe coperta albumului nu avea cum sa faca trupa prea draga autoritatilor: politistii texani le-au desfacut chiar echipamentele muzicale sperand sa gaseasca droguri. "Cautarea purei normalitati psihice... este baza cantecelor de pe acest album", spune textul de pe coperta, dar genul de garage rock si R&B practicat pe disc este foarte departe de normalitatea psihica. "Reverberation (Doubt)" si "Tried To Hide" sunt piese rock foarte intense, in timp ce "Roller Coaster" si "Fire Engine" degaja o atmosfera intunecata, fantomatica. Solistul Roky Erickson tipa si urla ca un adevarat posedat, in timp ce sunetele extraterestre ale "urciorului" electric al lui Tommy Hall adancesc starea de spirit deja cam fantastica pe care o degaja muzica.<br /><br />The Elevators n-au rezistat mult, iar Erickson a continuat cu o cariera solo neregulata (desi cu momente formidabile). Intr-adevar tensiunea dintre presentimentul sfarsitului ineluctabil si insistenta lui Simon asupra legaturii emotionale dintre oameni este ceea ce ce face acest din acest album o opera durabila, in ciuda numeroaselor momente care suna azi datate ("Feelin` Groovy").<br /><br />In timp ce LP-ul anterior, Sounds Of Silence, fusese scos in pripa pentru a exploata popularitatea hitului cu acelasi nume, Simon a insistat sa aiba de data aceasta control complet asupra procesului de creatie si inregistrare. Rezultatul a fost un album excelent lucrat pana in cele mai mici amanunte, la care foarte mult a contribuit inginerul de sunet Roy Halee. Minutiozitatea aceasta se vede imediat, de la prima piesa, "Scarborough Fair/Canticle", o capodopera pop, complexa, memorabila, comparabila cu oricare dintre creatiile lui Brian Wilson. Dar Simon nu este genul care sa ia ochii publicului cu un singur truc. Varietatea compozitiilor din </span></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-style: italic;">Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme</span></span></span><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-size:130%;"> face din el unul din cei mai inzestrati compozitori ai epocii: de la luminosul For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her", in care exceleaza Garfunkel, pana la "Homeward Bound", poate cel mai bun cantec compus vreodata despre viata pribeaga a unui muzician. Plictiseala pedanta din "The Dangling Conversation" este perfect calibrata muzical, in timp ce stilul caustic al melodiei rock "A Simple Dessultory Phillipic" suna inca relevant, desi multe din tintele srcasmului ei nu ne mai inspira astazi dispret.<br /><br />Piesa finala este o versiune dubioasa a melodiei "Silent Night" suprapusa peste un fragment de jurnal de stiri care anunta moartea lui Lenny Bruce si escaladarea razboiului din Vietnam.<br /><br /></span></span><span><span style="font-size:130%;">Lista pieselor<br /><br />01. Pe la mijlocul deceniului, cei patru muzicieni din Liverpool devenisera seriosi, dar, cu exceptia albumului <span style="font-style: italic;">Help!</span>, nu si mai sumbri. The Stones, in schimb, ranjeau "Satisfaction" si "She Said Yeah", melodii ce aparusera pe cateva albume, precum deliciosul <span style="font-style: italic;">December`s Children</span>, care nu erau decat compilatii pestrite scoase de casele de discuri si de ambitiosul impresar Andrew Loog Oldham.<br /><br />Spre deosebire de ele, <span style="font-style: italic;">Aftermath</span> era un album propriu-zis nu unul umflat cu hituri single. Ii vedem aici pe The Rolling Stones in plina expansiune: literalmente in "Goin` Home", dar, mai interesant, in domeniul experimentelor muzicale.<br /><br />"Lady Jane" este cea mai mare surpriza: o balada elisabetana a carei delicatete austera va reverbera in tanguirile muzicale de mai tarziu ale trupei. "Under My Thumb" uimeste atat prin sexualismul ei imperios, cat si prin ritmul sustinut la balafon. "Mother`s Little Helper" este un portret al unei gospodine devoratoare de pilule, invaluit in sunetul sitarului - care, ca si "Out Of Time", "Leave It" si "What To Do", a fost eliminat de pe varianta americana a discului. America n-a facut insa o afacere atat de proasta: a obtinut in schimb superbul "Paint In Black".<br /><br />Cei care au facut posibile aceste inovatii au fost Jack Nitzsche - textier, interpret si aranjor inspirat, care intrase in contact cu The Rolling Stones prin intermediul lui Phil Spector - si Brian Jones. "Acesta din urma, isi aminteste Keith, era un tip extrem de versatil, dar isi pierduse interesul pentru chitara" - de aici pasajele interpretate la sitar si balafon.<br /><br />Melodiile mai conventionale nu sunt insa si dezamagitoare - cea mai buna este rautacioasa si cam grosolana "Stupid Girl".<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Aftermath</span> a fost primul album Stones integral original, echivalentul lui <span style="font-style: italic;">A Hard Day`s Night</span>. Cu putin timp inainte de la lansarea lui <span style="font-style: italic;">Freak Out!</span>, cel de-al doilea dublu LP din istoria muzicii rock (<span style="font-style: italic;">Blonde On Blonde</span> a lui Bob Dylan tocmai sparsese gheata), firma a intrat in panica, temandu-se ca subtextul obscen al numelui formatiei ar putea sa sperie. "Ca si cum numele nostru avea sa fie Marea Problema", remarca sec Zappa in autobiografia sa.<br /><br />Reprezentanti ai efervescentei miscari freak de pe coasta de Vest, Frank Zappa si formatia sa si-au propus, sprijiniti de producatorul Tom Wilson, sa ia mintile publicului. In plus, voiau sa transmita un mesaj. "Fiecare melodie avea locul ei in cadrul conceptiei generale satirice a albumului", spunea Zappa.<br /><br />Conceptia aceasta este sintetizata de "Who Are The Brain Police?": e un geamat sinistru, anti-autoritarist, care da seama de degenerarea simultana a obiectelor si indivizilor. Alaturi de cantece intentionat bizare, gasim parodii ale muzicii pop ieftine, precum pastisa doo-wop "Go Cry On Somebody Else`s Shoulder", si cantece de dragoste complexe, cum este "How Could I Be Such A Fool?". In fata invaziei trupelor beat britanice pe piata americana, Raiders au rezistat eroic, la fel ca The Byrds sau The Beach Boys.<br /><br />In perioada de aur a muzicii pop, grupul a avut o serie intreaga de hituri si a cantat cu o verva absolut unica, pe care o deprinsese pe parcursul anilor in care acceptase sa apara pe secna oricarui club ii primea. Sunetul sau punk auster nu s-a demodat si pare la fel de curajos si azi. Si totusi, cei care si-i amintesc pe Raiders evoca de obicei costumele din Razboiul de Independenta, clovneriile si acrobatiile de pe scena si faptul ca trupa era preferata emisiunii TV zilnice <span style="font-style: italic;">Where The Action Is</span> a lui Dick Clark. Pana si The Monkees pareau sa aiba mai multa credibilitate.<br /><br />Dar, in 1966, maraiala amenintatoare a solistului Mark Lindsay in "Louie Go Home" suna la fel de feroce ca si cea a lui Eric Burdon de la The Animals sau a lui Van Morrison de la Them si a exercitat o mare influenta asupra lui Roger Daltrey de la The Who. Iar din punct de vedere muzical <span style="font-style: italic;">Midnight Ride</span> este aproape perfect - noua dintre piese sunt compozitii originale ale formatiei. Celelalte doua sunt probabil cele mai reusite melodii ale anilor 1960. "Kicks" compus de Barry Mann si Cyntia Weill, este o infocata pledoarie antidroguri facuta insa parca pentru un auditoriu care are deja creierii facuti varza. Piesa garage rock "I`m Not Your Stepping Stone" (de Tommy Boyce si Bobby Hart) va fi apoi reluata cu mare succes de The Monkes, dar aceasta este versiunea care i-a facut mai tarziu pe The Sex Pistols sa preia si ei cantecul.<br /><br />Lista pieselor<br /><br />01. Lou Adler, 1966<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-size:130%;">Constituit in insulele Virgine din ramasitele trupelor folk-rock The Journeymen si The Mugwumps, grupul format din Denny Dohrty, Cass Elliot, Michelle Gilliam si sotul ei, cantaretul, compozitorul si chitaristul John Philips, a venit in 1965 in Los Angeles, unde frumusetea armoniilor lor vocale le-a adus o colaborare cu Barry McGuire (cel mai faimos interpret al cantecului "Eve Of Destruction") si cu impresarul lui, Lou Adler. Primul mare succes al formatiei o fost "California Dreamin`", un single vandut in peste un milion de exemplare, un poem nostalgic dedicat Coastei de Vest, pe care se aud foarte bine vocile bogate si armoniile superbe, caracteristice grupului. I-a urmat discul de aur "Monday, Monday".<br /><br />Ambele melodii apar pe <span style="font-style: italic;">If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears</span> - albumul lor de debut -, care a ajuns si el pe primele locuri in clasamentele americane si a devenit un disc de aur. Alaturi de ele se afla compozitii care reflecta dorul de libertate specific perioadei ("Go Where You Wanna Go"); piesa finala, "The In Crowd", este o foarte reusita satira sociala ("If It`s Square We Ain`t There!"), care a fost apoi reluata intr-o versiune memorabila de catre Roxy Music.<br /><br />John Philips este fara indoiala principala forta creatoare din spatele acestei reusite, desi printre muzicienii care apar pe album se numara tobosarul Hal Blaine, basistul Joe Osborn si pianistul Larry Knechtel. Talentul componistic al lui Philips este recunoscut (el este si autorul melodiei "San Francisco (Flowers In Your Hair)", interpretata de Scott McKenzie), dar el reuseste sa dea un aer proaspat chiar si pieselor ne-originale - "Do You Wana Dance", "Spanish Harlem" si "I Call Your Name" -, toate scanteietoare gratie armoniilor vocale ale solistilor.<br /><br />Lista pieselor<br /><br />01. "Vroiam sa fie neagra si impresionanta la fel ca piesele de pe album, isi aminteste liderul formatiei londoneze, in locul culorilor alora zglobii."<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Face To Face</span> a insemnat o schimbare de metoda pentru Ray, fratele sau Dave, chitaristul, tobosarul Mick Avory, si basistul Peter Quaife. Era prima oara cand petreceau luni de zile lucrand la un album, suprapunand inregistrari facute in diferite sedinte. Discul a marcat, de asemenea, incheierea colaborarii cu producatorul american Shel Talmy, a carui preferinta pentru rapiditate si eficienta nu se mai potrivea eforturilor mai elaborate ale formatiei.<br /><br />"Party Line" inaugureaza albumul in stilul rock`n`roll obsinuit, in timp ce "Dandy" urmeaza linia satirei la adresa Londrei anilor 1960 pe care o exprimase hitul lor timpuriu "Dedicated Follower Of Fashion". Mare parte din ceea ce urmeaza este mai profund si mai intunecat. Ray isi analizeaza starile mentale labile in "Too Much On My Mind", pe care impresioneaza sunetul de harpa; ceea ce avea sa fie marele succes "Sunny Afternoon" este o piesa despre oboseala de lume, punctata de o frmoasa linie descendenta a contrabasului. "House In The Country" si "Most Exclusive Residence For Sale" justifica frecventa caracterizare a albumului drept un ciclu de piese despre societatea britanica. Si totusi, eticheta de album "eminamente englezesc" nu face dreptate diversitatii, atat textelor, cat si muzicii de pe disc. "Holiday In Maikiki", un omagiu adus lui Chuck Berry, deplange comercializarea insulei Hawaii. "Fancy este o piesa monotona de atmosfera, inspirata de raga indiana, in timp ce "Rainy Day In June" debordeaza de imprevizibilitate si mister.<br /><br />Face To Face nu a fost un mare succes de public - locul 139 in S.U.A, locul 13 in Marea Britanie -, dar marcheaza inceputul perioadei clasice a formatiei. Albumul este interpretat de la un cap la altul cu mare precizie si cu furie. Este pe rand hilar, strident, radical si entuziasmant - prima piesa "Monk Time" fiind poate unul din cele mai remarcabile imnuri inchinate distrugerii inregistrate vreodata. "I Hate You" n-ar fi nepotrivit in filmul fetis al anilor 1960 <span style="font-style: italic;">Pact cu diavolita (Bedazzled)</span>. Alte compozitii, precum "Boys Are Boys And Girls Are Choice" si "Drunken Maria", fac aluzii la o decazuta muzica folk germana - dar sunt ele acuzatoare, afectuoase sau pur si simplu e vorba de lucruri care au trecut pe la urechea acestor bieti soldati aflati departe de casa? Pare ciudat sa-si faca cineva un motiv de mandrie din asta, pentru ca, retrospectiv privind, invectiva era absolut nejustificata.<br /><br />Daca <span style="font-style: italic;">Highway 61 </span>era in 1965 debutul impresionant al lui Dylan in genul rock`n`roll, acest album, aparut sase luni mai tarziu, nu a fost un simplu pas inainte - a fost o prima capodopera a genului.<br /><br />Blues-ul dezlantuit din <span style="font-style: italic;">Blonde On Blonde </span>creeaza o atmosfera de noapte tarzie, plina de izbucniri de manie, reflectii si disperare. Cantecele rock`n`roll pure, precum "I Want You", alterneaza violent cu balade sfasietoare cum sunt "Visions Of Johanna" sau melancolica "Just Like A Woman", in timp ce mai intima "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Townlands" este un manifest al dragostei neimpartasite.<br /><br />Suprarealiste si totusi sensibile, observatiile poetice ale lui Dylan ne sugereaza ca eticheta de "exponent al unei generatii" care i se aplica ar trebui inteleasa in raport cu sentimentele care domina epoca si mai putin cu protestele ei ideologice.<br /><br />Era primul album dublu din istoria rock-ului si succesul lui a insemnat triumful tendintelor progresive, al primatului experimentarii si interesantului in lumea acestui gen muzical. E de inteles atunci de ce fotografia de pe coperta este neclara. In 1966, Bob Dylan inainta, in creatia sa, atat de repede, incat lumea se straduia din greu sa-l ajunga din urma.
